About The Artist
Claudia Dorey is a Visual Contemporary Artist from Montreal, Canada. At the age of fourteen Claudia got a virus that made her very ill. She realized that part of her chronic illness was due to oppressed trauma and emotions. Art became her way of transforming her pain into love.
She did not pursue studies in art as she believes it impedes on her creative process as every brush stroke represents creativity. Claudia thinks that being told how to create is rationalizing feelings, creating blind spots in what is. For that reason, she is self-taught. She wants to allow energy to flow through her instead of teaching her soul to abide to her mind through fear. Her pain created blockages in her energy and art is a state that restores her flow.
Her work embodies the idea that open-mindedness is the greatest gift someone can offer themselves. Amongst other things, perspective is the consequence of the accumulation of biases and lessons of the predominant culture in our physical environments.
She believes her art allows people to discuss over differences without involving ego. The purpose is to demonstrate that there is no need to convince others that our opinion is “right” but instead ensure that there is a mutual understanding of the commonalities. This allows individuals to enter a state of acceptance. Everyone can connect, it is whether or not the individual is willing to devote their time and energy into understanding the person they are sharing insight with. The more present we are, the more we see the world for what it is instead of what we want it to be. It is the removal of judgment towards others and ourselves. That is freedom and Claudia’s art is a reminder of that state that we all hold within ourselves.

Claudia paints many hidden faces and eyes. She wants people to look at her pieces and always notice new details. There are two intentions behind her recurrent style, the first being that humans have created a social construct that pushes the idea that external approval is an incredibly important thing, which often time causes self-rejection. The eyes represent the state of being seen, something we all deserve. Claudia’s hope is for her audience to introspect on the reaction they have looking at the piece, as well as understanding the impact of third party attention on their behavior.
The second intention is for people to feel as though they do not have to choose one perspective. Change does not result in instability. To Claudia it is what shapes humans and proves the power of consciousness. She creates many characters within one piece to remind people that we hold all facades that come together and create one. Life is equilibrium and diversity is necessary for its vitality.
As well as being a painter, Claudia draws a lot. She started working with this medium as it is a very convenient way of expressing herself. Her pieces challenge the concept of “truth” by being very much up for interpretation. Each creation can be put in all angles allowing different realities to unfold although under the emotional layer lies the intention, the feeling perpetuated through the creation. Her line work distinguishes her from others as it allows each individual to construe her work without it being abstract art.
